Below is listed a broad cross section of the projects in which John Ashworth and the firm have been involved over recent years.

Northstowe New Town, nr Cambridge UK: with Jonathan Dickins Consulting, we have prepared updated Sports Strategies for the first two phases of this planned 10,000 home new town on behalf of developers Gallagher and the Homes and Communities Agency.

Slinfold Golf & Country Club: we provided expert support to Indigo Planning in the preparation and submission of an application for planning permission for the addition to the clubhouse of hotel bedrooms, an extension to the spa and other associated facilities. Permission was granted in early 2016.

Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre, Kuwait: D&J International Consulting invited us to assist with the financial and operational planning of this new centre in Kuwait consisting of a Performing Arts Centre, a Music Centre, a Conference Centre and National Archive and Library.

Chingford Golf Course: an inquiry channelled through the Golf Consultants Association led to a commission from the City of London Corporation to review the operation of this public golf course in Epping Forest.

Girl Guiding UK: we worked with associates Bridget Baker Consulting to review the operation of the Training and Activity Centres, which provide for training and outdoor activity holidays for girl guides, with the aim of exploring opportunities for widening the market appeal of the Centres and attracting external business.

Golf Tourism in Italy: a review of the characteristics of the golf tourism markets in N. Europe on behalf of a consortium of golf and resort developers in S. Italy with advice on an appropriate strategy for the development of golf as a tourism generator for the region.

Whitbread Marriott Country Clubs: assistance to resort managers and the Group Golf Operations Director with the preparation of business plans for the strategic development of the Group’s golf resort businesses including hosting of tournaments at Dalmahoy,Forest of Arden, Hanbury Manor and St Pierre Chepstow.

Tuscany: appraisal of the investment potential of a residential country club in Italy on behalf of the Peter de Savary organisation with particular reference to the golf tourist markets of Northern Europe.

Scottish Golf Tourism Executive: working alongside economists Segal Quince Wicksteed to prepare a financial model illustrating the economic impact of golf tourism to Scotland and the benefits of golf tourism to each category of stakeholder in the industry.

Wales Tourist Board: with a Golf Consultants Association team, preparation of a golf tourism development strategy for Wales building upon Wales success in attracting the Ryder Cup in 2010. We were retained with the team to advise on an investment marketing programme to attract golf tourist developments into Wales.

Northeast Investment Holdings: commercial due diligence for the prospective purchaser from Crown of Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre, a substantial PAYP golf facility located in the eastern outskirts of London.

Indoor Golf Arena: as part of a warranted investment study led by Aecom, research into the potential market and preparation of future earnings estimates for a 50 million euros indoor golf and hotel project proposed for a site in Holland

New Forest District Council: jointly with Smith Leisure, assisting the Council with the tender and procurement process which led to a management contract with MyTime as lessees and operators of Dibden Golf Course.

Cliveden/Lambourne Golf and Health Club: advice on the opportunity for repositioning the club membership offer on behalf of new American owner operators.

Harleyford: working alongside the estate owner, coordinating the development of this acclaimed golf club in Buckinghamshire from feasibility study stage, through funding, marketing and membership sales to staff recruitment and club opening. We also project managed the sale of on site lodges.

Tecina Golf Resort, La Gomera, Canary Islands : review of the strategic options for expansion of a successful hotel owned by Fred. Olsen Ltd. into a golf and real estate tourist destination on this small island off the coast of Tenerife. Golf Tecina later opened successfully as the only golf course on the island.

Belfast Golf Academy: assistance to PKF in Belfast with the preparation of a business plan for a combined elite and public golf academy on behalf of the Golf Unions of Northern Ireland, the Sports Council and Hilton hotels.

Peel Holdings plc: with Indigo Planning, advice on the strategic development of a 150 acre site in Trafford Park, Greater Manchester as a regional sports complex and introduction of sports and leisure developers and operators as potential lessees.

Erewash Borough Council: advice to the Council on the development potential for full scale golf facilities of a site currently occupied by a small pitch and putt golf course.

Cambridgeshire Golf Club: with Jonathan Dickins Consulting, advice to Gallagher Estates on the impact of Planning Policy Guidance 17 on proposals to develop housing on the site of an existing golf club at Northstowe.

Chorley Borough Council: with a GCA team, following a review of the market positioning, business performance and earnings potential of Duxbury Park municipal golf course, the course was successfully marketed on a long lease to the private sector.

Down Hall Country House Hotel: advice to the hotel owners on a leisure strategy for development of the hotel grounds, including the potential for golf, health and fitness and spa facilities.

Fractional Resorts: for the owner of a golf resort hotel in SW England, review of the domestic and international markets for fractional ownership of residential property built alongside the golf course.

Hobbs Cross Golf Centre: independent verification to the owners of the viability of plans to build a floodlit driving range and practice area.

South Cambridgeshire District Council: independent assessment of the ‘need’ in planning policy terms for holiday lodges and clubhouse extension which were the subject of a planning application from a commercial golf club.

Holiday Inn: feasibility study for a hotel based health and fitness club to be located on a business park near Newbury.

Pacific Investments: review of the European markets for health and fitness in support of a UK club operator’s investment memorandum to raise capital for European diversification.

Holmes Place: preparation of a business prospectus for the leisure management division of health and fitness company Holmes Place in anticipation of a takeover of the company.

Barratts: preparation of a specialist report in support of Barratt’s planning application for residential development of a site in Windsor involving the removal of an existing squash and fitness club.

Escot House: advice on the viability of a residential spa and fitness club at a country house estate and visitor attraction close to Exeter.

Whittlebury Golf & Country Club: on behalf of a prospective purchaser, and working alongside Bridget Baker Consulting, preparation of an ‘Over the Wall’ estimate of the financial turnover and future prospects of the management training and conference hotel, health & fitness club and spa at Whittlebury Hall.

Derby City: with the Golf Consultants Association, advice to the Council on the future viability and strategic management options for the two municipal golf courses in the city.

Invest Northern Ireland:  on behalf of a Government agency, independent review of the business plans and assessment of the likely viability of a proposed hotel, spa and golf development for which the promoters had applied for substantial public funding.

South Bucks District Council: on behalf of the Council, independent assessment of the strength of the business case prepared in house for the development of a new clubhouse on the site of a successful municipal golf course.

Quantum of Damages: acted as expert witness on the quantum of damages in a High Court action commenced by a golf club alleging loss of business caused by defective greens.

Ramside Hall Hotel: advice to a hotel operator on the membership structure and pricing of a completed golf course prior to opening, and with the marketing strategy for sale of memberships.

Sports Village: with Bridget Baker Consulting, assessment of the viability of proposals for a Sports Village in the Derbyshire Peak District of England.  Facilities include accommodation in lodges for sale, apartments to rent and in a 200 bedroom hotel. The sporting theme is generated by a football academy including indoor and outdoor 5-a-side pitches; a tennis and badminton academy; an adventure sports feature; a golf course; a health & fitness centre and spa; kids world and a water park.

Wave House: commissioned by PKF to advise on the likely viability in the UK of a unique surfing concept based around artificial waves in small pools. The pools are the magnet to create a lively entertainment venue attracting a wider range of customers than just the boarding community, which itself could be attracted across all disciplines – surfers, snowboarders, skateboarders, wakeboarders and windsurfers.

World Challenge Expeditions: with Savills, assessed the viability of a schools targeted attraction designed to recreate the experience for children in a participative environment of the climatic extremes found in the jungle, the desert and the polar ice cap.

Harrison County, Mississippi: with Pathfinder Team Consulting, advised a consortium of counties in the state of Mississippi on the potential for attracting international investment into tourism facilities and attractions on the back of the major economic impact of the newly licensed gaming industry.

Peel Holdings plc: advised on a bid to purchase the Royal Yacht Britannia from the Ministry of Defence including preparation of a business plan with a view to her future use as a visitor attraction on the Manchester Ship Canal in Trafford Park.

Knebworth Estate, Stevenage: with Savills, reviewed on behalf of the owners the opportunities for generating improved levels of revenue from tourism and leisure use of the Knebworth Estate.

Island of Madeira: with PKF, directed a tourism strategy review for the island of Madeira including an audit of the existing tourism product, an assessment of trends and growth potential in source markets, recommendations for the improvement and development of hotels and tourism facilities on the island and the preparation of a sales and marketing plan.

Lake District Holiday Village: viability study of a planned self-catering holiday complex in the Lake District comprised of up to 18 units and on site leisure facilities.

Nottingham: with PKF, directed an investigation into the feasibility and financial viability of an ice academy to be run by Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean, with  the aim of training the next generation of ice dance champions.

World Student Games: with PKF, directed the preparation of capital and revenue budgets to help the City of Sheffield’s bid for the World Student Games.

National Football Stadium for Wales: with PKF, directed an analysis of various options for the development of a National Football Stadium for Wales in the context of the Taylor Report on behalf of the Football Association for Wales, S. Glamorgan C.C., Cardiff City Council and Cardiff City AFC.

St Andrews Golf Course: advised a Scottish landowner on the prospects for and viability of a Jack Nicklaus golf course close to St. Andrews.

Watford Leisure Park: gave expert evidence at a planning inquiry into a proposed mixed leisure development at Watford, including multi–screen cinema, 10–pin bowling and leisure ice.

Leisure Pool and Theatre: advised Welwyn Hatfield District Council on the viability of a proposed new leisure pool, and on changes required to an existing conventional pool and theatre.

North Weald Airfield: led a PKF team commissioned by Epping Forest D.C.to develop a leisure and tourism strategy for the central area of the district, and specifically to advise upon the potential for leisure development of North Weald airfield.

Barratts: gave expert witness evidence to a planning inquiry in support of an application by a developer to build on a site occupied by a run down speedway stadium.

National Lottery Grant Application: prepared a feasibility study in support of an application for grant from the National Lottery Sports Fund toward a health and fitness club to be developed in school grounds in the Peak District of Derbyshire.

Sports Pitch Development: advised TRW Lucas Aerospace in support of their planning appeal against the LPA’s refusal to allow development on the site of the company’s sports pitches.

Gallagher Estates at Northstowe: with Jonathan Dickins Consulting, we assisted a master development company with the preparation of a PPG17 needs assessment of golf and sports facilities as background to the submission of a planning application for a 9000 homes new township development close to Cambridge. Subsequently gave evidence on behalf of the developer at a Public Examination into the Local Development Framework; and prepared the Play, Sport and Recreational Facilities Strategy for the new town which was submitted as part of the planning application.

National Theatre: managed a short review of the National Theatre’s case for an increase in subsidy from the Arts Council of Great Britain.

ROH and RSC: reviewed the management and financial prospects of the Royal Opera House and the Royal Shakespeare Company for the Minister for the Arts. Recommended ways of reducing the companies’ deficits by expenditure cuts combined with a revised basis of public subsidy.  The report, part of the Priestley Report, was published by H.M.S.O.

Barbican Centre: directed a major review of the Barbican Centre for the City of London Corporation.

Istanbul: with PKF, directed a feasibility study into the development of two leisure centres in Istanbul.

Ski Resort: directed a feasibility study of a proposed new ski resort in Turkey, including an appraisal of the existing markets and potential growth in skiing holidays from Europe.

Golf Resort, France: assisted developers with a market demand assessment and preparation of a business plan for a hotel, leisure and residential development to be built around an existing golf course in the Vendee, France.
