Slinfold Golf Club

We were retained by the owners of Slinfold Park, a successful golf and spa resort to assist Indigo Planning to prepare an application for planning permission for extensions to the existing golf clubhouse to provide additional treatment rooms, function space and a 70-bed golf lodge. Our remit was to demonstrate the business case for the proposed development which was complemented by the erection of a new golf academy building with additional driving range and training bays. Planning permission was granted in early 2016.

Northstowe is a planned new town of 10,000 homes on land to the north of Cambridge. We first became involved with developers Gallagher in 2004 working alongside Jonathan Dickins Consulting to help demonstrate that planning objections to development on an existing golf course could be overcome on grounds that the course was surplus to local needs. That led to a second phase of work to prepare a Sports Recreation and Play strategy for the proposed new town, which was submitted as part of a planning application to South Cambridgeshire District Council. The application was never determined, partly because of the economic downturn in 2008.

Ownership of part of the development site subsequently changed and the construction programme was split into 3 phases. Gallagher own the northern part of the site and are developing phase 1 of the new town. Phase 2 is owned by the Homes and Communities Agency. We have prepared separate Sports Strategies, one for each phase of the development, on behalf of the two owners; both strategies have been submitted and approved by the planning authority. Play strategies for each phase will be prepared at a future date.

For Alaska Development Consultants, we prepared a report in support of a planning application for conversion of the Brighton Hippodrome into a Vue cinema complex with associated restaurants. Brighton Hippodrome Concept ImageThe planning authority supported the application as being the only viable option for preservation of the building and for its future use as an entertainment centre. The Hippodrome has been empty for several years since its last use as a bingo hall and the internal fabric is deteriorating. The cost of restoration and refurbishment is substantial. Local campaigners mounted a vigorous challenge to the proposals in pursuit of the objective of saving the Hippodrome as a theatre. The landowners have sold the building and the new owners are not now proceeding with the cinema proposals.

We provided expert advice for a private pension fund on the development options for a former cinema and snooker club located in South London.

We have considerable experience of providing expert support in the planning application process. The current economic climate has dampened the enthusiasm of developers in the UK to promote new projects, but in spite of that, 2011 brought us two new cases. Read the rest of this entry »
